
Today it’s time to compare the two latest OS available for smartphones’ handset, the Apple iOS 5 and the Windows Phone 7 Mango. We’ll compare the keys features of each OS to find out which one is the best OS.
Let’s start the comparison discussing the OS’ User Interface (UI). Compared with the customized-based Android OS, both Windows Phone 7 and iOS 5 have a quite static home screen user interfaces. The Apple iOS 5 has only app icons appearing on the home screen with no possibility to add live tiles or application like Andriod does. In the meantime Windows Phone 7 has the ability to add live tiles to the home screen but still supports limited application compared to Android’s.
Verdict: Windows Phone 7 has slightly more attractive user interface with its ability to add live tiles to the home screen.
The second feature to compare is the OS’ notification. The Apple iOS 5 has been very static in term of home screen features as it mentioned beforehand. However the iOS 5 has also try to make the home screen more interesting by adding notifications both to the home screen and lock screen. The result is quite attractive and practical notifications. The time you get a notification, you’ll have a message pop out at the top of the screen. The notification will also come with a preview if it’s a message or a tweet, Facebook message or SMS.
In the meantime the Windows Phone 7’s notification comes through the live tiles interface of the operating system. It’ll simply pop up on the live time once you get a new text message, email, Facebook message or are mentioned in a Twitter feed.
Verdict: The Apple iOS 5’s notification is just more attractive than the Windows Phone 7’s.
The third feature to compare is the social networking support. Both OS have Twitter introduced into their platforms. The Apple iOS 5 in fact has twitter integrated thus it’ll easier to tweet links direct from the photo application, browser, YouTube or Maps.
Verdict: The Apple iOS 5 provides more integrated Twitting experiences, thus it’s a wins for the Apple’s iOS 5.
The fourth feature to compare is the OS’ cloud services. The Apple iOS 5 naturally comes with the company’s iCloud support. Just in case you doesn’t familiar with the iCloud, it’s apple’s new way of synching up all your data, including contacts, calendars, photos, files and emails between all of your iDevices and your PC. The iCloud sports 5 GB storage capacity.
Meanwhile the Windows Phone 7 comes with Microsoft’s SkyDrive. It has similar concept with iCloud with a larger storage capacity at 25 GB.
Verdict: iOS 5 gives more practical cloud service, thus it’s a win for Windows Phone 7
The fifth feature to compare is the OS’ browser. The iPhone naturally comes with a Safari browser which was once one of the best and the most stylish handset’s browser. However today, despite has been improved with the addition of tabs and ads blocker features the Safari is getting overtaken by the browser of others OS. The most notable flaw of the Safari is the lack of flash support, which would make your surfing experience less enjoyable.
Meanwhile the Windows Phone 7 Mango is equipped with IE9 which in addition to support the Flash is also the faster browser compared to the iOS 5’s Safari. Features include tabbed browsing and support for HTML 5.
Verdict: The lack of Flash support proves to be the biggest liability for the iOS 5 browser. It’s a clear win for the Windows Phone 7 Mango’s browser.
The last feature to compare is the OS’ OTA or over the air updates. Unlike Android, both OS’ have limited over the air updates. The Apple’s iOS is only support the over-the-air updates just now with the ability to update the firmware over the air. Meanwhile the Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 limits the OTA updates for only smaller updates, while the bigger ones have to be updated via the Zune.
Verdict: Apple iOS 5 has given more freedom to its users to perform OTA updates, thus it’s a clear win for the Apple’s iOS 5.
Final Verdict:
While both OS boasts a lot of interesting and attractive features, it’s still a little bit static compared with the Google’s Android OS. In short the Windows Phone 7 feels simpler while the Apple iOS 5 seems to provide more flair.
