Head to Head Comparison: BlackBerry PlayBook vs Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1

This time we’ll compare the BlackBerry Playbook with the brand new Samsung’s tablet, the Galaxy Tab 10.1. Let’s see which one the better tablet by comparing each tablets’ key specification.

The first spec to compare is the tablets’ form. The BlackBerry Playbook has 194 x 130 x 10 mm, 425g of dimension and weight while the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1has 256.6 x 172.9 x 8.6 mm, 595g.  The Playbook, first BlackBerry’s tablet has quite small size which make the tablet looks more like a smartphone with an irregular large size rather than a tablet.  Aside from its small dimension, the BlackBerry PlayBook sports nice looking proportions with sleek styling, in addition it also has a reasonable thin stature.

In the meantime the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 as it name suggest sports an ideal size for a tablet 10.1 inches. The larger size makes the Galaxy Tab’s slightly heavier weight understandable.  In term of style the Galaxy Tab 10.1 looks very attractive and functional. The contoured back panel, for example, besides looks really elegant it also serves as feature to make the Galaxy Tab easier to grip.

Verdict: Both tablets arguably have the same high level of aesthetic value. However the larger size of Galaxy Tab should wins this round comparison for the Samsung’s tablet.

The second spec to compare is the tablets’ display setup. As the name suggest, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 sports 10.1-inch TFT capacitive touch screen at a resolution of 800 x 1280 pixels. The Samsung’s tablet comes with the TouchWiz UX interface with features include multi-touch, Swype text input, accelerometer and gyro sensors.

Meantime the BlackBerry Playbook, as it was mentioned earlier, offers a smaller screen at 7 inches. The screen is capacitive touch screen at smaller resolution than the Galaxy Tab at 600 x 1024 pixels.  Accelerometer and multi-touch input is included to the Playbook’s features list.

Verdict: Samsung Galaxy Tab clearly wins this round comparison with its larger and better resolution screen.

The next spec to compare is the tablets’ storage capacity. Both of the tablets come with 16 GB, 32 GB, and 64 GB onboard storage versions to choose while also have the same RAM capacity at 1 GB.  With such a similarity, the only thing that separates both tablets is the card support. While the Galaxy Tab supporting Micro SD up to 32 GB, the BlackBerry Playbook offers none.

Verdict: The Samsung’s Galaxy Tab wins this spec comparison thanks to the availability of card support.

The fourth spec to compare is the tablets’ processor setup. The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 is powered with a 1 GHz dual-core processor running the Nvidia Tegra 2 chipset with an Nvidia quad-core Geforce GPU as an added muscle for visual enhancement.

Meanwhile the BlackBerry Playbook runs on a dual-core 1 GHz TI OMAP 4430 Cortex A9 processor paired with an Imagination Technologies POWERVR SGX540 graphics processing unit (GPU).  TI IVA 3 image and video accelerator and image signal processor are also included for the extra muscles.

Verdict: Both Tablets’ processor setup has more than enough muscle to ensure jiffy experience for the users. Nevertheless it’s Galaxy Tab that wins this round comparison with its more powerful processor setup.

The fifth spec to compare is the tablets’ operating system. The Galaxy Tab runs on Google’s Android 3.0 Honeycomb which is specified for tablet usage.  The Honeycomb is arguably the best available Android OS version with a lot of improvements compared to the earlier version of Android, 2.3 Gingerbread.

Meantime BlackBerry Playbook naturally comes with the RIM’s BlackBerry Tablet OS. The RIM’s OS is probably not getting the same level of attention as the bigger names on the smartphone market but it has the reliability, functionality as well as security level that will not disappointing you.

Verdict: The Android is certainly better in term of personalization but the BlackBerry’s also features a mature OS that can be dependable for running your tablet smoothly.  It’s a draw.

The last spec to compare is the tablets’ Camera setup.  The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 sports a modest 3.15-megapixel primary at 2048×1536 pixels and 720p. The camera comes with autofocus, LED flash and geo-tagging features while there is also a secondary 2 MP camera.

In the meantime the BlackBerry Playbook has 5-megapixel primary camera at 2592×1944 pixels and   1080p video capture quality. Features include autofocus and a 3 MP secondary camera.

Verdict: The Playbook clearly wins this round comparison boasting higher megapixel primary and secondary cameras.

Final Verdict:  Both of the tablets features a great deal of attractive features and spec. Both are looks good with reliable functionality.  However if you should choose one among the two, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 is the best choice.
