Let’s compare the new phones that were introduced not so long ago. Those two phones are Apple’s iPhone 4S and Samsung’s Galaxy Nexus. As we already know, brand new product will always offer something new or at least better than its predecessor. So, what’s new going to be offered by the two combatants? Let’s find the answer while we are enjoying reading the comparison of these two phones.
1. Form Comparison between Apple’s iPhone 4S and Samsung Galaxy Nexus
Samsung Galaxy Nexus comes with larger design than the predecessor, measuring at 135.5×67.9×8.9mm and 135g of weight. The larger design is not only meant to accommodate a large screen, but it also avoids the device to be looked more rounded. This device has been designed with a very balanced design. Moreover, the device with an abundance of rounded corners and curved edges the look becomes boring or odd.
As for the design comparison, iPhone 4S that comes with 115.2×58.6×9.3mm and weighing of 140g looks pretty similar to the Apple’s previous phone, the iPhone 4. Actually, this is not a big deal to most Apple’s fans. But, as it has been written on the first paragraph, the newer product will always offer something new or at least better than the predecessor. So, it term of design, Apple seems fail to impress the future fans of them.
Though iPhone 4S doesn’t offer something aesthetically new, it might offer some improvements inside.
So, the winner of the first round is Samsung Galaxy Nexus.
2. Display comparison between Apple’s iPhone 4S and Samsung Galaxy Nexus
Apple has gained more popularity through Retina Display that was attached on their previous phone’s screen. This time, Apple has done it again with blessing the same technology on iPhone 4S’s 3.5-inches of LED-backlit IPS TFT capacitive touchscreen that boasts a resolution of 640×960 pixels, which gives a very high pixel density of 330 pixels-per-inch (ppi). The screen of this handset is also featuring some additions that include scratch-resistant glass with an oleophobic surface to repel fingerprints, as well as multi-touch input support, a three axis gyroscope sensor and an accelerometer.
In term of screen specification, Samsung has also gained popularity to be a good phone screen manufacturer. For the Google Nexus, Samsung opt the big screen measured at 4.6-inches Super Amoled. This is one of larger screens on market but though it is large, but due to the screen boasts 720×1280 pixels of resolution, the pixel density is raising to 316ppi. As for the addition, the screen of Galaxy Nexus features oleophobic coating, multi-touch input, accelerometer and gyro sensors, just the same with what are featured on its competitor.
Finally, which phone is going to come out as the winner as for this section? Is it the iPhone 4S or Galaxy Nexus? Actually, it is hard to choose between them as both phones offer nice screen with quality, but every battle needs a winner. For this round, Samsung Galaxy Nexus comes out as the winner since the device has bigger screen with quite high pixel density.
3. Storage comparison between Apple’s iPhone 4S and Samsung Galaxy Nexus
Device with more storage is more preferable when the user needs a lot of space to keep their file. For the third we are going to compare the storage of both phones.
iPhone 4S is available on three versions, they are the 16GB, 32GB and 64GB. Each of those versions is packing the same 512MB of RAM. The device users cannot expect the existence of external storage as the manufacturer does not support for any of this.
At the meantime, the competitor of Apple’s latest phone, Samsung Galaxy Nexus is available on a couple versions. They are the 16GB and the 32GB version. Just like Apple’s iPhone 4S, I doesn’t offer a support from any external storage. But, in term of RAM, the device has been equipped with better RAM at 1GB to help the processor displays better performance.
For storage comparison, actually it is depending on the future user’s need. If the future users wanted to save more file in their device, it is recommended to prefer the Apple’s product as it offers more variants in term of storage than the Galaxy Nexus. However, the bigger internal storage capacity of the device, the more it will cost the future user.
So, which one you are going to choose? Is it the Apple’s phone that offers three version of internal storage capacity with less RAM size? Or it is the 32GB with 1GB of RAM?
4. Processor comparison between iPhone 4S and Samsung Galaxy Nexus
The next stop is the processor comparison. Both Samsung Galaxy Nexus and iPhone 4S are dual core processor powered phones. This is not the first time for Samsung to power their product with dual core processor but the reason why doesn’t the manufacturer plant something more on chipset and graphics still makes us confused. For the Apple’s side, dual core processor is the first experience to them.
In term of processor’s type, either iPhone 4S or Samsung Galaxy Nexus has been equipped with the same type but different clock speed. These new handsets are using ARM Cortex-A9 processors, the iPhone 4S is clocked at 1GHz while the Galaxy Nexus comes in at 1.2GHz.
Apple decided to use a combination that was previously used in the iPad 2 to good effect, Apple’s own A5 chipset and a PowerVR SGX543MP2 GPU.
In the meantime, the Galaxy Nexus uses a TI OMAP 4460 chipset and a PowerVR SGX540 GPU. This is the strange part of the Samsung phone as the device is not powered by something stronger than other ‘premium’ Android phones such as the Galaxy S2. Besides, the GPU is the same as one used in the previous Nexus S phone.
Regarding to the processor speed, though the Galaxy Nexus has an extra 200MHz on the clock, Apple has done some optimization between the processor, the operating system and the other hardware in order to enhance the performance of the iPhone 4S. By this optimization, we should see a pretty similar smooth performance like what the iPad 2 did.
There is no winner this time as both of handsets offer pretty similar specifications.
5. Operating System comparison between iPhone 4S and Samsung Galaxy Nexus
Apple’s iPhone 4S is approaching to the market with bringing the manufacturer’s latest operating system, the iOS 5. As we already know, the newer stuff would bring something new. This is the term that might be pretty proper to describe the arrival of iOS 5. The Apple’s latest OS has a number of new improvements, including the iMessage service, expanding messaging from just SMS and MMS text to include a BlackBerry Messenger style service between iPhones. Apart from that, it also enhance the browser which is faster now, and it also offers some new features including new viewing modes for either storing web pages to view later or stripping them down to raw text for easier reading.
To the Twitter addict, here is good news brought to you by the iOS 5. It has been more integrated. However, the users will be required to download and install to enjoy every feature inside of it. iOS 5 also brings another excitement to the iPhone 4S’s users who want to subscribe newspaper and magazine. It adds a Newsstand app that gathers all the newspaper and magazine subscriptions into one place, this application supports for background download.
The highlighted feature on iOS 5 is Siri Assistant. This feature offers a hand to the device users in controlling the device which is including organise calendar and allows the device users to set reminders, read text messages, reply, make phone calls and search for information.
In the meantime, Samsung Galaxy Nexus comes to the market as the first device that runs on Google’s new Android operating system, version 4.0 or Ice Cream Sandwich. Just like the competitor, it also offers various improvements including faster web browsing with smoother touch control and tab functionality, an enhanced Google voice search, a completely re-designed interface and improved customisation, app switching and multi-tasking controls.
The result of this section of comparison is not going to anybody as both of phones offer improvements from their previous version and is necessarily better than the other. For once again, it is draw.
6. Camera comparison between iPhone 4S and Samsung Galaxy Nexus
Camera becomes a must have feature on recently released smartphones. Sometime, people put this feature to their consideration when buying a new phone.
Compared to the some smartphones on the market, Samsung Galaxy Nexus has a disappointing camera as it only offers a 5-megapixel primary at 2592×1936 pixels. The camera has been furnished with some addition features including 1080p video capture, an LED flash, autofocus, touch focus, geo-tagging and face detection.
Apart from offering the main camera, Galaxy Nexus has been equipped with a secondary 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera with video-call support.
As for the camera comparison, Apple has raised the stake with offering an 8-megapixel primary at 3264×2448 pixels and the fifth lens also been added an improved aperture to allow in more light and better photo quality.
For additional features, it brings in a video calling over Wi-Fi and features a front-facing VGA secondary camera. There is also support from LED flash and video light, autofocus, touch focus, image and video stabilisation, face detection and geo-tagging.
By reading the camera comparison, there is no doubt here that iPhone 4S has won this round.
7. Final Result
iPhone 4S and Samsung Galaxy Nexus both are good handsets with decent specification. Those devices are ready to compete with the other phones on the market. However, both of them are not as powerful as we have expected.
The manufacturers have planted powerful processors to each handset, but Samsung should have planted better chipset and GPU so the device could be more powerful.
As for the screen, both of them have an excellent screen though the pixel density on each screen is different. The screen of iPhone 4S has higher pixel density but the Galaxy Nexus offers larger screen with a higher resolution.
So, the result of today’s comparison is draw. Both iPhone 4S and Galaxy Nexus are decent smartphones that quite fit in to the recent market.
