Smartphone Battle: Which One is the Better Phone, Sony Ericsson Xperia Mini or HTC Wildfire S?

Today we’ll compare two budget-friendly Android smartphones, Sony Ericsson Xperia Mini with HTC Wildfire S. Both phones are two solid options if you are in a budget, but which one is better? Let’s find it out by comparing both phones’ specifications.

The first spec to compare is the phones’ form. Sony Ericsson Xperia Mini has 88 x 52 x 16 mm, 99g of dimension and weight while HTC Wildfire S has 101.3 x 59.4 x 12.4 mm, 105g. The Sony Ericsson Xperia Mini is made from mostly plastic composite. Some people might argue that that Sony Ericsson managed to make the Xperia Mini neatly enough that it doesn’t feel creaky or cheap however honestly it doesn’t look too premium. And yes, even the nice touch sensitive keys and arched home button don’t help much in this aspect.

Meantime the HTC Wildfire S, despite its smaller stature looks as good as its more expensive siblings. The small stature even makes the device more pocket friendly. A cheaper price doesn’t mean less premium appearance for this HTC Wildfire S.

Verdict: The vote goes to the more premium looking device, the HTC Wildfire S

The second spec to compare is the phones’ optical setup. The Xperia Mini comes with a 5-megapixel camera with features include auto-focus, geo-tagging, image stabilisation, face & smile detection, LED flash and touch focus. The Xperia Mini’s camera setup is also equipped with 720P video capture quality.

In the meantime the HTC Wildfire S also boasts almost similar setup with the same 5-megapixel camera. Features include LED flash, autofocus and geo-tagging. It’s quite decent setup with the capability to capture good picture in good light while also able to handle more light limited situation with its LED flash. Nevertheless HTC Wildfire S could get a better video capture quality than the offered VGA quality.

Verdict: Better video capture quality wins it for the Sony Ericsson Xperia Mini

The next spec to compare is the phones’ processor setup. The good thing about the very competitive smartphone market in 2011 is that it forces the manufacturer to gives more to its costumer. Even for a cheaper version phones manufacturers keep planting powerful muscle in it.  In this case the Sony Ericsson’s Xperia Mini can be the one of the most suitable example for it as it is powered with a powerful single-core 1GHz CPU in Snapdragon chipset teams up with the Qualcomm’s capable Adreno 205 GPU. That setup is complete with the addition of 512MB RAM that will give a jiffy experience for the device users.

Meantime, the HTC’s Wildfire S comes a little disappointing in this spec as it only offers a modest 600MHz CPU. Even with the same 512 RAM as the Xperia Mini the users of this handset will likely have to deal with the lack of power and some lagging experience since the Widfire comes with the power-draining Sense UI overlay.

Verdict: The extra clock wins this round comparison for the Sony Ericsson Xperia Mini.

The fourth spec to compare is the phones’ operating system. Both phones run on the Google’s Android 2.3 version, Gingerbread. The Gingerbread OS is one matured, stable and secure operating system as well as very easy to customize. In addition the use of android means that you’ll get access to Android Market to get various kind of app you could ever wish for.

The differentiate factor for this spec is the UI. The Xperia Mini comes with TimeScape while the Wildfire S sports the eye-candy HTC’s Sense UI.

Verdict:  Wildfire S comes triumphant for this round comparison thanks to the use of Sense UI.

The fifth spec to compare is the phones’ display. Sony Ericsson Xperia Mini comes with a 3-inch LED-backlit LCD screen which displays 16 million colors and operates at 320 x 480. Meantime the Wildfire S comes with a slightly better spec with a 3.2-inch TFT screen that displays 256K colors and runs at 320 x 480 screen resolution. Both phones offer a nice and clear screen, with the Sony Ericsson come as the better one by boasting the BRAVIA mobile engine to make the Xperia’s display setup even better.

Verdict: It’s clear enough; Sony Ericsson Xperia Mini edged Wildfire S.

Final Verdict: Sony Ericsson’s Xperia Mini has dominated almost the entire spec comparison we have today with the exception on the form and OS aspect. While the HTC Wildfire S is also a decent device if you have to choose between the two, it’s recommendable to goes for the Sony Ericsson Xperia Mini
