Smartphone Head to Head Comparison: HTC Sensation vs. Nokia N9

Now is the time to compare the new Nokia sensation with one of the HTC’s best device the Sensation. We’ll find out which one is the best handset in term of specifications after the jump.

As usual the first specification to compare is the phones’ form. The Nokia N9 has 116.5×61.2×12.1mm, 135g of dimension and weight while the HTC Sensation has 126.1×65.4×11.3mm, 148g. The HTC Sensation is very much alike with the other HTC siblings. It has the same distinctive features of HTC style, i.e.: rounded corners as well as pretty nice body proportions. Overall it’s a quite nice looking handset but on the other hand don’t expect the device appearance to be as sensational as the name suggest.

In the meantime the Nokia N9 offers something bolder and fresher than the HTC sensation’s design. The device has adventurous, bold, and brave style with a curved screen which contrasts with the extremely squared-off bodywork. As it’s not enough, Nokia added more flair to the handset combining those contrasts with some vivid coloring. Some people with a more reserved style might argue that it’s a little bit too much considering that the shape of the handset is already different enough. For people like this there is a black version of the design which is not only able to tone down the jarring contrasts between the colors and shapes but also look really cool like a unique large piece of polished obsidian.  The screen of the handset also giving a unique sci-fi feels thanks to the extensive screen right to the edges of the body.

Overall, Black version or colors, the combination of the bold angular bodywork and the curved jet black screen gives the N9 irresistible contrast that make it really an interesting device to have.

Verdict: The HTC Sensation is nice looking, but more than nice is always necessary to win this comparison and here the Nokia N9 delivers with bold and interesting design. It’s a win for the new N9.

The second specification to compare is the phones’ display. The Swedish manufacturer equips the new N9 with the sophisticated 3.9-inch Amoled capacitive touch screen at 480 x 854 pixels of resolutions and 238 pixels-per-inch (PPI) of pixel density.  The use of the state of the art AMOLED technology for the screen setup which means that the handset will offer high quality display with improved brightness, color intensity and battery economy when compared to the usual LCDs.

Features of this N9’s screen are including multi-touch input support and an accelerometer sensor for screen rotate functionality. In addition Nokia also equips the display with the durable Gorilla Glass as well as anti-glare polarizer coating that way the sophisticated display will be well protected from minor shocks or sun glare.

Meanwhile the HTC Sensation boasts a slightly larger screen at 4.3-inches of S-LCD capacitive touchscreen with also higher resolution than the N9’s at 540×960 pixels, and pixel density of 256ppi. The Sony’s screen technology, S-LCD is considered to have the same level of sophistication with the Nokia’s Amoled technology thus you can expect similar power efficiency, brightness as  well as more vivid and radiant colors than the usual screens.

Same with the Nokia N9, the HTC Sensation’s screen is also equipped with the strengthened Gorilla Glass, however unfortunately HTC doesn’t equip the Sensation with anti-glare polarizer coating thus the device should be more vulnerable to sun glare compare to the N9.

As many other HTC’s handsets the Sensation is also comes with the in-House HTC Sense 3.0 user interface (UI) with features include multi-touch input together with an accelerometer and gyro sensor.

Verdict: In term of technology each phone is in the same level by using AMOLED technology for the Nokia N9 and S-LCD for the HTC Sensation. Therefore to decide the winner of this round comparison we look for the largest screen size and the highest resolution as well as pixel density between the two. The winner of this round comparison is HTC Sensation.

The third specification to compare is the phones’ storage capacity. The HTC Sensation offers a modest storage capacity with only 1GB of usable internal space capacity to store your data. 1GB is surely not an ideal for a sophisticated smartphone storage capacity considering lots of thing you can store to the device for your entertainments and needs nowadays.

To redeem the sin of offering such a little inboard storage capacity HTC Sensation provide a sufficient MicroSD support up to 32GB with the addition of 768MB of RAM to help the processing power deal with the data.

FYI: The phone memory offered by the HTC Sensation is actually 2GB but half of that is utilized for the system partition in which the files of the operating system and HTC sense really eat up the space.

In the meantime the Nokia N9 offers its user with two options of internal storage space to choose from. There are the 16GB and the impressive 64GB version. Choosing any of them will give you abundant space to store loads of apps, data and media content onto the device. In addition to the impressive internal storage capacity the Nokia N9 is also equipped with the imposing 1GB of RAM as well as 512MB of ROM to help the processing power to deal with such a big chunk of memory. The only flaw on the Nokia N9 memory setup is the lack of any card support which limits data mobility of the device.

Verdict: Despite the lack of MicroSD support the Nokia N9 storage setup is still better than the HTC Sensation thanks to the significant difference of internal storage capacity, higher RAM and bonus presence of ROM. It’s a win for the new Nokia N9.

The fourth specification to compare is the phones’ processor setup. The HTC Sensation is powered by an imposing 1.2GHz Qualcomm dual core processor on the MSM 8260 Snapdragon chipset combined with Adreno 220 graphics processing unit (GPU) which will handled the visual processing of the device.

On the other hand the Nokia N9 runs on the more modest power house of only a single core 1GHz ARM Cortex A8 processor on the TI OMAP 3630 chipset. Whizzy visual tasks are handled by a PowerVR SGX530 GPU while the integrated 430 MHz TI TMS320C64x digital signal processor deal with the rest phone tasks such as audio, image and data transmission.

Verdict: Both phones come with great processor setup; however the presence of dual core technology on the HTC Sensation means it will be almost impossible for the single core technology of the Nokia N9 to compete. It’s a clear wins for the HTC Sensation.

The fifth specification to compare is the phones’ operating system. The new Nokia N9 runs on the in-house Nokia’s and Intel’s Linux based operating system, the MeeGo 1.2 ‘Harmattan’. And yes, the OS is as eccentric as the name suggests.

Discussing about the MeeGo 1.2 ‘Harmattan’ is really interesting because it has gesture control as the central aspect of the operating system hence the Nokia N9 has been built to accommodate it.

The N9 has almost practically no button thus the users can only rely to the use of different swipes to be able to switch between the three purpose-built home screens. It’s a little awkward to use at first, but the more you get used to it, it’ll become more interesting.

In the Nokia N9 home screens the main focus is about the application management in which will revolve around how you interact with the applications.

There are three home screens and the first of these has the title ‘Applications’.  This home screen provides the users a place to organize and launch applications. The second homes screen titled ‘Open Apps’, it’s the place where the users can see and control whatever applications that active in the device.

The last of three home screens is the “Event” screen. This is the place where you’ll receive and view notifications from apps. The cool thing about this part of home screen is that you’ll also receiving system notes as well as a social networking updates. There are also chance that this section could be used as a more general information screen with the ability to add mail, text and instant messaging to this part of home screen.

For the surfing needs, the users of this operating system are provided with a Webkit 2 based browser with HTML5 support and the mail services include multiple accounts and inboxes as well as push mail capability. Meanwhile for the attachments, the OS supports several formats such as Microsoft Office, PDF and Open Office file formats.

As it mentioned earlier the third part of home screen will feature notifications from social networkings. This can be possible because MeeGo is integrated with several famous social networking such as: Facebook, Skype, GoogleTalk, Gmail and Twitter apps therefore it will be easier for you to connect with the world.

For the need of Navigation, the OS offers the Nokia Maps app while for the entertainment, particularly games, Nokia equips the phone with some interesting games including a preloaded version of the world famous Angry Birds.

To make the Meego even more convenient to use, Nokia reportedly said that the OS will be able to conduct the OTA (over the air) updates, thus the issue of large update patches will soon be a yesterday inconvenience. Nokia N9 also allows synchronization with a Mac or PC with using the Nokia link.

While Nokia runs on the “out of ordinary” operating system, the HTC Sensation runs on the increasingly popular Android 2.3 Gingerbread. The OS is the best Android variant for smartphone until the arrival of the upcoming Android Ice Cream.

The Google’s Android has been one of the best operating system in term of multi-tasking performance for some time. This reputation is further improved by the impressive Gingerbread which not only offers the smoothness of operation but also made the multi tasking better in term of functionality.

To begin with, the Gingerbread has the new app management interface that enables the users to view some useful statistic, i.e.: memory, battery and processor usage which are displayed along with how much storage space each app takes up as well as the menu that gives the users control over every active apps. For people who don’t like to pay attention of what your smartphone is up to, don’t worry, the Gingerbread can also take the burden to supervise your applications closely.

In addition to the aforementioned improvement, the Android Gingerbread also improves in other areas. For starters there is an update to improve the whole interface to be faster and more intuitive to play with. The same improvement is notable in the use of touch keyboard in which after the update offers the user with a significantly better experience comparable to what you’ll find in an iPhone for example.

However, despite the improvements, the Gingerbread still has some weaknesses. The surfing and browsing experience could be a lot better, instead the OS offers the users with a poor performance of browsing with no tabs and meager scroll and zoom function.

Verdict:  This time we have a real close battle in this round comparison. The Nokia’s MeeGo is a very interesting operating system to discuss. To be honest, we never ask too much of Nokia’s operating system considering the Swedish manufacture reputation for creating OS has never to bright. However the presence of MeeGo actually excites us. The OS surely has promising potential to offer and also a few eccentricities and flair to keep you attracted to it. The decision to use open source base for the OS also offer interesting improvement for the OS in term of apps and development. It’s really impressive.

On the other hand the Android is becoming a popular operating not without reason. The Android had been proven to be reliable and functional as well as fun to play with considering thousands apps and games you can adds to the platform.

It’s really hard to choose one for this round comparison; until we see the development of each OS in the future we call it draw.

The last but least specification o compare is the phones’ camera setup. HTC equips the Sensation with an 8-megapixel primary camera at 3264×2448-pixels. Features include touch focus, autofocus, face detection, geo-tagging, image stabilisation, instant capture and dual LED flash. In addition the camera has also offers 1080p video capture as well as a VGA quality secondary camera.

On the other hand the Nokia N9 is also equipped with a 8-megapixel primary at the same resolution with the HTC’s. The optical setup is manufactured by Carl Zeiss with features include: autofocus, a dual LED flash, geo-tagging, face detection, touch-focus, exposure control and white balance. Nokia N9 also offers video capture though in a slightly lower quality at 720p as well as the presence of secondary camera and video call support.

Verdict: Both phones offer the users with an impressive specification of optical setup that can even attract some camera enthusiast. It’s a close call here, but we decide to give this round comparison for the HTC Sensation for their better video capture quality.

Final Verdict: Nokia N9 has been impressive in term of flair and creativity and looks more interesting than its HTC counterpart. However the comparisons show us that the HTC has better specification in most areas. In this case credit have to be given when it’s due, it’s a win for the HTC Sensation.
